Alls well that ends well

May 31, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Thank you Lovisa and Viv for kind thoughts for Kim. I expect her thick coat kept her from getting bruised, she must have hit the sides of the pit as she fell. She had a tiny scratch on her nose! Otherwise she’s happy and tired tonite as we managed to get out for a walk today after all the showers. At least it’s not so cold now. I hope to get some bedding plants tomorrow and get my pots planted up.
I am making a new Austrian blind for the kitchen. A lot of work but I am enjoying it although my brain and eyes are getting tired working out how much cord I need. An awful lot of it.
Au revoir.

Last night

May 29, 2007 · 3 Comments

We are all tired this evening as we didn’t get to bed til 3 in the morning. John took Kim (our sheepdog Collie) out about twelve for a last walk round. I went to bed but He came in and said to me that we had a real emergency. I thought he meant with a sheep. But Kim had fallen in the drainage pit at the side of the septic tank. The drain cover had disintegrated and she fell in. Its about 8ft down, just a small size pit. I got dressed in warm clothing as it was cold and went out.
He thought about asking a neighbour for help, he had the ladder out but at 1 in the morning!
So I rang 999 and asked for the Fire Brigade. They came in about 20 minutes, all 6 crew and were very kindand efficient.
They put a ladder down, a young man went down then discovered there wasn’t sufficient room for him to carry the dog up so they pulled the laddr up, he picked up Kim, they put the laddr back, he climbed up a bit and John leant in and took Kim off him.
Fortunately there is only about half an inch of muddy water in there so she just got smelly paws and her tail dirty.
They came in the kitchen for a cup of tea and will come back another time to give us another smoke alarm.
It was very good that Kim didn’t hurt herself falling that way down and today John has bought another drain cover.
Because this bit is under the trees he had forgotten about it. It could have ended so differently if Kim had hurt herself.
Catty caught a mice tonight, very small, it was dead, she played tossing, then ate it!!

The third triplet – new story

May 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

There’s a new story under “pages”. Read the first few paragraphs here;

Dust motes danced in the sunbeams shining through the attic window.  Boxes were piled up with old suitcases, some broken furniture that might one day be repaired but never had been and old wine bottles.  Just looking made Tina sneeze.  It was too good a summer day for clearing out. Gingerly she poked at a disintegrating plastic bag and pulled out some clothes. They were fifties and sixties styles, retro for her.  Excited, she held up a dress, navy, short and slim line with long sleeves and a Dollyrocker label in the neck.

‘This is great.’Ten minutes later there was a pile of clothes and she grinned, ‘Mum won’t like me keeping all these.’  As she picked up the last bag she saw a small suitcase underneath. Curious, she sat down and pulled it towards her. The locks clicked and Tina was intrigued to see photos. To a modern girl the people all looked so old fashioned in the sepia pictures in the album.

‘I think that’s great-grandfather James.’ A smart, very serious gentleman with a fine moustache was sitting in an armchair with three tiny babies swaddled up like moth pupae on his lap.     ‘Strange.’ Murmured Tina, ‘I didn’t know we’d had triplets in the family. Twins yes but surely great-grandmother didn’t have five children.’

Turning the pages she saw two little girls in fairy dresses, two girls in gym slips, date 1927 and two stunning women in their RAF uniform, one smiling demurely, the other with such a cheeky grin.  The date on the back was 1944.  There was another of a good-looking airman with one of the girls, they were laughing at each other, his arm around her.   ‘I wonder what happened.  There are no photos after 1944.’  Tina placed the album in a bag full of dresses and lowered it down the ladder.

There will be another story coming on shortly, a ghost story this time.  It mentions the place in Cambridgeshire where my husband’s father was based in the last war.  There are other similarities but I won’t spoil the story.

It’s cool and windy here so I hope it’s better where yu are.

Adieu.

Out of the window – new story

May 16, 2007 · 1 Comment

I belong to a writing group and the homework theme for this month was “Out of the Window” and this is what I’ve written;

***

I usually wake up early.  It’s a long time before someone comes to help me dress but I don’t mind.  I watch the sky and welcome a clean, new dawn.  In the summer I listen to the birds singing and watch the clouds.  As the nights lengthen I follow the moon and stars in their passage across sky.  I wish I could put a name to them but if I call the wrong star Andromeda or Sirius – does it matter?

Just because I spend so much time staring out of the window they think I don’t know what they are saying.  Words like ‘dementia’ and ‘poor old thing’ float over me.  I know exactly what they mean, there is nothing much wrong with my hearing but, after the stroke my speech has been difficult so I’ve given up trying to express myself.

I wish there were glass doors or French windows in here.  The windows are too high to see the view.  When I came to this home I tried to explain but no one understood.  I’ve got used to it, now I’m happy to sit, gazing at the sky, watching the clouds and as the sky changes, so do my memories.  Let’s face it, I’ve nothing to look forward to except death and that doesn’t bother me one bit.

Hello friends
I’d like to put more stories on and would welcome your comments. I have done ‘nice’ stories, murders, articles – all sorts really. I’ll put something a bit different on in the next day or so if I can work out the cut and paste.
Sun and wind today – I wish I’d done the washing.
Au revoir.

Bluebells

May 11, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Here in Wales we have had a fantastic warm, even hot some days April and he wild flowers in the lanes have revelled in it. I have never seen so many bluebells. They smother the banks and verges in a haze of purply blue. Add to that the white cow parsley or Queen Anne’s Lace as it is sometimes called which fringes the verge and it is a beautiful picture. We have identified the fairly rare heath milkwort up on our moor.
This has tiny dark blue flowers and was supposed to encourage cows to milk better in the old days.

Now the row has come and probably won’t stop for weeks. The grassis growing which pleases the farmers but they want to start cutting silage soon. No one is content.
Enough for now.
