All done

Our small bale hay is in the barn, we can relax, there are 174 large round bales up the field. They will stay out for a couple of weeks so that they can ’sweat’. Hay tends to heat up from inside and these big bales could combust if they were stacked up.
Although it’s been a bit cloudy and cool the weather is still OK for hay. There is more to come in with neighbours and the forecast is good so John will be over there on Fri or Sat probably if they do small bales.
I have been picking blackberrries today, they taste nice with the sun on them.

A good day, today

August 25, 2007 · 1 Comment

At last, a fine, sunny day.  There is 23 acres cut, and it is drying fairly well. John was up the fields tonight pulling out the thick lumps of grass to try and get them to dry out.  He could see a huge bank of clouds massing over Cardigan Bay.  They have arrived and we are in a thick mist. Let us hope the sun comes out early, hot to burn it off.

The forecast is good until the end of next week so we hope we’ll get some decent hay made.  Most of it will be big, round baled.  John wants about 200 small bales for us.

We are expecting guests as well but they havn’t told us when they are coming so they will have to take us as they find us.

Bye.

It’s hay time!

August 22, 2007 · Leave a Comment

First the good news,. The weather has changed and although it is not really hot, we hope to get the fields cut tomorrow (Thurs).
The forecast is good intil the end of next week, so there should be enough days. Mark is really keen to come down and help but I don’t think his days off will coincide with it.
The not so good news next;
I had a wheelchair hoist fitted to the roof of my car on Monday and this is working well but we are v unhappy with the roof rack that it is fitted on. The clamps for this are over the door frame and the four doors not do not fit flush and are slightly distorted at the edge. Apart from the fact that now rain could get in, if there is permanent damage to the door this would affect the price if I want to sell it.
I’ve told the workshop in Llanelli where this Braun Chairtopper was fitted but have this afternoon ordered a proper Vauxhall roof rack which will fit into the fitting space. This was £80 as opposed to the £40 Llanelli charged but will be worth it to avoid the damage.
So I shall have to take the car back and get this changed over.
Nothing go smoothly for us.
Never mind, all things get sorted in the end.
Bye

It’s cold

August 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Whatever it’s like in the rest of Britain it’s cold and damp here in West Wales on our hillside.  It was 23 in Cardigan this afternoon, felt really ‘close’ but back home down to 16.  It’s the middle of August and we still havn’t cut hay.

For anyone reading this outside the UK, whether it’s climate change or not, our weather here is certainly very unhelpfu.  But we are luckier than a lot who were flooded so we shouldn’t grumble.

I actually wrote a poem for a competition about 10yrs after Princess Dianas death.  I am not a poet so it was a good exercise in itself.  I will send to V to post.  Am arranging to go on a writing workshop in Sept which should be interesting.

Adieu.

Rain again

August 4, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The rest of Britain might have sun but it is grey and dreary here in West Wales with a drizzle all morning. Ieuan has two fields of hay down which will be well soaked. The BBC forecast says sunny intervals Sun and Mon, light rain on Tues then sunny on Wed so have to hope they dry out quickly.

Trouble is the forecast changes, the weather systems are unpredicatable in their predictability.
Once the weather looks set then it will be all systems go for a few of us.

Not quite hay time

August 2, 2007 · Leave a Comment

John is out at the neighbours helping to get their hay in. They have 3 fields to come in so will be a busy evening. Fortunately this afternoon was bright, sunny and hot – perfect weather to row up and bale.
J has been up the field pulling ragwort out. This is a pretty, yellow flower that is poisonous to horses when it’s left in hay so it must be removed.
There is also a laburnham branch that is hanging over the field that needs to be cut down.
The forecast is for rain until next Tuesday here, so we shall not be cutting for a while.
There was a beautfiul sunset tonight, looking out to sea but it’s getting dark now.
If J is not here I’d better watch Big Brother so I can tell him what’s happened.
Bye….
