Is it back to …

June 6, 2009 · 2 Comments

normal, today?  We’re on our own and it’s raining.  The neighbouring farmer who spread slurry yesterday after cutting and making silage will be pleased.

It’s been a good few days with Mark and Vivi here.  Mark enjoyed  himself going over to Brechfa forest with Jules and their motor bikes.  Mark did the clearing round the edge of the yard that I wanted doing and fixed the horn on the van.  John has fiddled about with this for ages with no success.

They had to get the vet in yesterday because of the young ram’s foot.  He’d got a lump growing in it.  If it had just been held by a skin tag, like a polyp they could have put a lamb’s tail ring on it.  It was attached at multiple sites and would have bled copiously.  He had a local anaesthetic in the leg and now has a smart blue bandage on it.

He’s gone out with the old girls, one of whom was not v pleased, she probably thought he’d pinch her breakfast.

Mark and Vivi are having an adventure day, coasteering etc.  Well, if they jump in the sea then the rain will wash them off.

I was going to give the car a good blast with the pressure washer but not today now.

    Hi Jay,

just wondering how the ram is getting on? Like you we’ve had one case of flystrike here – what a disgusting thing; & with the warm, damp weather & our sheltered pastures it’s just not possible to evade easily.

One thing I cannot stand is flies; although I appreciate they do a necessary job. But not the revolting blowfly, preying off healthy, living tissue rather than cleaning up the dead stuff. The affected ewe is one of our most feisty; interestingly, she’s been the only sheep in the flock to be affected & is literally the ‘black sheep of the family’, being the only dark animal in the flock. At least after treating her she seems a lot better; but I can’t wait to get them all sheared.

Mind you even shearing doesn’t necessarily solve the problem as we had a big wether male badly affected not two weeks after their fleece was removed, last year. Let’s just keep our fingers crossed for a long, hot, dry summer – for a welcome change….as even the slugs are getting me down, too! We seem to be getting the worst of everything with this topsy-turvy weather, at the moment.

Did M & V enjoy their coasteering? I think they’re very brave; I couldn’t do it. I just hope the water was warm!

BTW so many thanks to you both, for your help the other evening. The trolley is perfect & has made life so much easier for swiftly setting up & closing down, at shows. Apologies that I haven’t had a chance to catch up but it’s been so ridiculously hectic here I haven’t even managed to properly catch up with T for several days.

Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of the stand – which, incidentally, looked fantastic (thanks on major part, to you chaps!) because I was literally rushed off my feet – it seems that everyone had heard of & wanted to try, the notorious potato gelato! It went down really well & I sold loads – & even had people turning up with freezer bags to fill up, for the occasion.

Ironically it all turned into a bit of a media circus, though; after our full-colour ‘centre spread’ in the Western Mail last week it seems that ‘Potato Gelato’ is on everyone’s lips: after being interviewed on BBC Radio Wales; Radio Pembrokeshire & (bizarrely) BBC Radio Cambridgeshire (well I suppose some of the goats came from there, originally; so there is a tenuous link….although the programme’s producer is fanatical about spuds. Allegedly.).

We subsequebtly appeared in the Daily Mail; the Daily Mirror; the Star; & even the Sun (eugh)!

What was even more weird though, was that even STV (Scotland) took an interest. Perhaps they’re considering commissioning a Haggis or Scotch Egg Gelato?! Hmmm…..wouldn’t mind having a crack at deep-fried Mars Bar flavour, mind you – although as Haggis is one of my favourite dishes admittedly I AM working on it…ooerrr!

Anyway – thanks again folks, for literally making my day; & doubtless, many more in future.

And do tell J that NO the wheels don’t seem excessivwly wobbly; & NO, they haven’t fallen off or split the wood, yet – evidently assembled by a Master Craftsman…for which I am very grateful.

Love to you both – J xxx

BTW – How do I get a copy of your latest historical novel…?! Fantastic! From the excerpts I perused the other day I was reluctant to put it down & would love to read it from cover to cover – what a fantastic & well-researched story.
